Happy Earth Day!
It’s Friday…the moon is FULL and SPRING is upon us.
We are all ready for another season to dig in and create some real magic in our own front and/or backyards…am I right?!
It doesn’t get any better than that.
The picture you see is a view of the natural Aspen and Oak woodland which surrounds our property and it was my wish to highlight this in order to honour the beauty Nature is more than capable of accomplishing without our hand in the creative process. However, when we come together in a co-creative effort to beautify and grow together in a spirit of connection…well, that’s when our spirits soar and lives are enriched by the plant life we welcome into our world!
I have always enjoyed this Chinese Proverb “The best fertilizer is the footsteps of the gardener.”
Our hands and our loving attention I believe, are integral to the health and well-being of our gardens.
As a gardener, I recognize that in many ways, we are all driven by the seasons. Our plans and dreams revolve around the shape and feel we want our gardens to take in the coming months…honestly, how many winter months have we had to contemplate what worked and what didn’t work in the previous summer?!
The desire to grow our own food is a passion many people share with the rising cost of buying fresh produce in our grocery stores and the heightened desire to know where our food is coming from and assurances that it is chemical-free and actually healthy to eat! We are looking to nourish not only our bodies, but also our heart and souls.
For all these reasons I wanted to create this blog to share some of the insights born from working on this one piece of land for almost two decades now. I want to invite you on my personal journey and more importantly, I hope to learn from your own experiences and be able to share that with others along the way.
There is no shortage of how-to’s when it comes to gardening. In fact, it’s almost overwhelming just how much information is available at our fingertips these days on how to plant, compost, maintain and grow perennials, annuals, vegetables, shrubs, trees and every kind of exotic flower imaginable in our own backyards.
Every gardener I know, myself included is in many ways a voyeur when it comes to garden design. We absolutely LOVE to see the stunning combination of plants other gardeners are bringing together to create living art in their own backyards. This is performance art at it’s best!
Dynamic, alive and constantly changing with every season.
Whether you are a new gardener facing a property with no inherited landscape whatsoever, or a seasoned gardener who is ready to tackle an overgrown bed or border in desperate need of attention and refurbishing – my hope is that you find some inspiration in the coming months and years as I tackle some of my own challenges and realize some cherished garden dreams.
I’ll be sure to let you know what’s possible in a Northern climate – and so far – I can safely say, the possibilities are endless and only limited to your unstoppable curiosity and inherent creativity.
Begin wherever you find yourself. A container filled with a favourite vegetable, herb or flower is enough to set the dream in motion, because in many ways it just comes down to the love of nurturing growth…and that always begins with a tiny seed – whether literal or in your mind’s eye. Let it grow…just as this site will do over time – in our lives and in our yards – this is garden love.
Garden lovers welcome💚
